The Sustainable Energy Fund announces its support for a new "green" school building in Harrisburg.
4/15/2004 - Allentown, Pa - The Londonderry School in Harrisburg, Pa will hold the ribbon cutting for their new, environmentally friendly, school building on Thursday, April 15. The Sustainable Energy Fund (SEF) provided financial support to encourage the construction of the "green" school building.
The Londonderry School, a private, non-religiously affiliated school with a preschool through eighth grade program, has been in service for over 30 years. Londonderry has developed a reputation for its strong values in providing quality education that enables individual creativity and expression, and at the same time emphasizes social responsibility. These values are reflected in its commitment to the environment as shown in the new school building.
SEF is proud to participate in this project because of the leadership Londonderry has shown in its quick adoption of relatively new green building standards. Additionally, Londonderry will be in the position to teach stewardship of the environment to its students for years to come. The building itself will be a valuable teaching tool. Londonderry will also be able to expand its enrollment as a result of the new structure, from approximately 185 students to 225.
The school building is characterized as "green" due to its anticipated status with the U.S. Green Building Council. The building will receive a rating of Silver by the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) standards. LEED is the industry standard for categorizing green buildings. The building will also exceed industry energy efficiency standards, set by ASHRAE, by at least 30%.
SEF's $500,000 loan, provided on a subordinated basis, was a key factor encouraging a Harrisburg area bank to finance the remainder of the funds necessary for the school's construction.
Headquartered in Allentown, Pa., SEF is a non-profit foundation dedicated to the development of clean energy in Central Eastern Pa. primarily through loans and equity investments. Funding is available to those who comply with SEF objectives, which include the use of renewable energy resources, clean energy technology, energy efficiency projects or energy conservation. Some grants are also available to those who meet these terms.
