Energy Education at Hersheypark
2004-05-24 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: The Sustainable Energy Fund provides continued grant support to the clean energy education programs at Hersheypark. 5/24/04 Allentown, PA - The Sustainable Energy Fund (SEF ) announced today that it will continue its support of the sustainable energy education program at Hersheypark. SEF has helped sponsor both the development of a sustainable energy exhibit at the Park as well as the incorporation of sustainable energy concepts into Park theater productions. The family themed environment and commitment to education at Hersheypark makes it an excellent partnering opportunity for SEF. The 2.4 million visitors the Park hosts annually provide an exceptional forum for spreading the message on renewable energy and energy conservation. The sustainable energy exhibit at Hersheypark includes a 10kW wind turbine and a 2kW photovoltaic array. The photovoltaic array includes a display that shows visitors exactly how much electricity is being generated from sunlight and wind at any given moment. Additionally, the Hersheypark Green Team does five theater shows a day that include sustainable energy concepts. The Green Team’s theater is located in the center of the Park next to the wind turbine and photovoltaic exhibits. This year’s production will be a pirate themed show that will incorporate clean energy topics. Hersheypark is also host to Science Day and Physics Day, both of which open the Park to high school field trips. Students are able to use the Park to carry out science experiments. The SEF sponsored clean energy exhibit is one of the highlighted locations within the Park on that day. SEF was awarded an environmental education grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to assist in supporting the Hersheypark sustainable energy educational program. Headquartered in Allentown, Pa., SEF is a non-profit, private foundation dedicated to the development of clean energy in Central Eastern Pa. primarily through loans and equity investments. Funding is available to those who comply with SEF objectives, which include the use of renewable energy resources, clean energy technology, energy efficiency projects or energy conservation. Some grants are also available to those who meet these terms. To learn more about SEF and their programs log on to www.TheSEF.org or contact SEF at 610-264-4440 or TheSEF@TheSEF.org .
