With an estimated 60% of all land in Pennsylvania used for agricultural purposes, the challenge of effective waste management is an important concern. Poorly managed farm waste can cause serious environmental damage. But agricultural waste also offers a tremendous opportunity as an alternative energy source.

Sustainable Energy Fund’s BioMass Solutions program converts agricultural waste into energy through anaerobic digestion, a cost-effective, efficient solution for waste management and alternative energy generation. Using a biochemical process that breaks down organic matter (manure) in an environment devoid of oxygen, energy is generated through the production of the by-product methane.

SEF funds anaerobic digestion facilities across Pennsylania, supporting a wide range of agricultural uses:

  • BioGas for Energy Generation: Methane production for electricity or pipeline-grade gas.
  • Agricultural Waste Management: Improved livestock manure collection and storage, odor control and pathogen minimization.
  • Nutrient Control: Nitrogen and phosphorus removal for soil and water protection.
  • High-Value By-Products: Quality fertilizer, bedding and compost for farm use or re-sale.
  • Greenhouse Gas Reduction: Offering a clean, reliable alternative to fossil fuels.
