2006 SOLAR SCHOLARS™ PROGRAM

Email A Friend Print This Page Frequently Asked Questions

By participating in the Solar Scholars program, I not only learned about the application and implementation of solar technology, but also about creating a portfolio of sustainability options and making lifestyle changes to support a more energy-efficient economy. The entire Bucknell campus benefits from the vector of solar arrays that we installed and which are being used by classes in energy audits. Also, the program helped raise awareness about energy use on campus. Solar Scholars provides an excellent opportunity for educational outreach, which is what we need if the energy economy is going to change in this country.
Jessica Scott ‘08, Bucknell University Solar Scholars participant and program coordinator

Through Sustainable Energy Fund’s Solar Scholars Program, Pennsylvania college students are designing and implementing working solar photo-voltaic (PV) technology systems on their campuses to generate electricity and energy. This first-in-the-nation solar energy education initiative is preparing the next generation of energy conservation leaders with the knowledge they will need to make informed decisions to promote renewable energy sources and conservation.

Program Benefits
Participation is open to colleges and universities throughout Pennsylvania and offers the following benefits:

  • Funding, incentives and academic credit for students to design, build and operate a PV-powered solar installation of significant impact on their campus
  • Financial sponsorship for selected students to attend a weeklong, hands-on, training and certification workshop on applied photo-voltaics and design. Participants return to campus as “solar champions,” ready to advocate solar power as a viable, efficient and environmentally sound solution.
  • Campuses also receive Internet-based education resources on solar and other emerging clean energy technologies to support an academic curriculum on sustainability.
Students from the following six Pennsylvania colleges and universities participated in 2006/2007 program:
