Boot Camps Topics - General Description - BOOT CAMPS begin MONDAY July 12 - 101 Packard Lab Lehigh University 7:30 am Minimize

SEF's innovative award winning Scholars Programs cultivate a comprehensive understanding and passion for Sustainable Energy.  During the boot camp attendees have an opportunity to learn from the industry's best sustainable energy trainers. Attendees learn the science behind renewable technologies, basic system design, and installation. Attendees may choose from one of four pre conference boot camp tracks:  solar photovoltaic energy, solar thermal energy, wind energy, or energy efficiency. Boot camps meet all day Monday & Tuesday and Wednesday morning. Please meet in room 101 Packard Laboratory Lehigh Univeristy Asa Packard Campus at 7:30 am for registration. Classes begin at 8 am.  The boot camps are followed by the Sustainable Energy Conference on Wednesday afternoon, all day Thursday, and Friday morning at Stabler Arena.  If you are an educational institution interested in more information please contact Jessica Mauro at jmauro@thesef.org.

1) Solar Photovoltaic

Attendees will be immersed into the world of renewable energy with a focus on solar photovoltaic (PV) technologies. Attendees will learn the basics of solar PV science, technologies, system design, and system installation by qualified and experienced solar PV professionals. Industry specialists and experts will also discuss topics ranging from how solar PV fits into a distributed, intelligent electric network,  financing of large-scale commercial PV as well as, how grass-roots organizations are working to advance the cause of “green” power.

2) Energy Efficiency

Boot camp attendees will follow instruction, discussion and hands-on training in various areas of energy efficiency.  Topics may include but not be limited to the latest heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) technology. Proper use, installation, maintenance, and the features and benefits of energy-efficient windows, insulation materials and HVAC systems. Evaluation and measurement techniques to support potential energy efficiency projects for commercial and industrial facilities. Support for completion of incentive program applications.

4) Solar Thermal

2010 is the first year we will offer a boot camp in solar thermal systems. Solar thermal energy is a technology for harnessing solar energy for thermal energy (heat). Solar thermal is different from photovoltaic, which converts solar energy directly into electricity. Solar thermal boot camps will be led by our friends at Earth Net Energy.

Topics covered will include: collectors, heat exchangers, technology and systems.
